PET protects information which, for specific reasons, cannot be revealed to the public, since PET, as part of public administration, is subject to the rules on secrecy. Apart from that, this consideration of protection is also linked to the way in which an intelligence service necessarily must work in order to be efficient.
In gathering information, the Service receives extensive information from Danish as well as foreign liaisons. It is a prerequisite in receiving such information that it must be used for the purpose of the Service only and as such must not be passed on to others. The same applies to information that the Service receives and gathers from sources within the circles being investigated.
If PET disregards such precautions to the liaisons and source intelligence, it may not only lead to the source or another person being brought into imminent danger but also result in the Service being denied relevant information in the future. Any such development would affect the efficiency of the Service and thus affect public safety in Denmark.
