PET is part of the Danish police and in terms of organisation, the Service is a department of the National Police (Department G). Due to its special assignments, however, PET reports directly to the Minister of Justice.

Over the years, PET has always adjusted its organisation and resources to the current threats and changes in society. The staff – today approx. 700 persons – consists of police officers, office staff, legal advisers and other academic as well as communications staff, translators and technicians.

The Service has its headquarters in Copenhagen and a department in Aarhus. In addition the Service has contact persons in all police districts.

The head of PET is Director General. The deputy to the Director General is the 1st Deputy Director who additionally holds general responsibility for the administrative functions of the Service. The next in line is the 2nd Deputy Director who is in charge of the legal staff and responsible for the legal handling of the Service’s operational assignments. The Head of Operations is responsible for the operational tasks of the Service.
